Our faculty's average age is 10 years younger than the average US pathologist, and they take pride in being aggressive and entrepreneurial. They have trained at world-class institutions, such as Harvard, Yale, Johns Hopkins, Mayo Clinic, Duke, Stanford, amd the University of Pennsylvania, and share a commitment to our academic mission, while applying cutting-edge diagnostic technology and clinical care for the benefit of both the patients and physicians of Western Massachusetts.

Clinical Activities

Our volumes are surprising – nearly 50,000 surgical specimens, 90,000 cytology specimens, and 5-6 million clinical tests are performed annually. Baystate Reference Laboratories (BRL), a service of BMC, is fully accredited to the highest regulatory standards and participates in the accreditation and evaluation of clinical pathology laboratories world-wide. The Department of Pathology provides exceptional patient care with concurrent interdisciplinary professional consultation. This strong interaction of technical and client service personnel delivers optimal patient care and client service. We serve 3 hospitals within the Baystate health system, but nearly 70% of the clinical workload comes from the outpatient setting. The department’s nearly 500 FTE provide services to 1400 clients. These figures make the Department of Pathology one of the largest practices in New England, and BRL one of the largest hospital-based reference labs in the country.
