Anesthesiology Fellowship

Critical Care-Anesthesiology Fellowship

The goal of the Fellowship is to teach a multidisciplinary approach to patients who are critically ill.  Fellows spend 9 months in the Critical Care Unit and 3 months in Cardiac Anesthesia. The Fellows are expected to develop expertise in trauma, shock, major surgery, burns, drug overdose, sepsis, and respiratory failure management. The Fellows participate in attending rounds with intensivists, traumatologists, and faculty from the Departments of Medicine, Surgery and Anesthesiology. In the operating room, Fellows are under the supervision of a cardiac anesthesiologist. The position is open to board eligible or board certified anesthesiologists.

Key Points of Fellowship

  • 9 months in the Adult Intensive Care Unit and 3 months in the Department of Anesthesiology

  • Develop expertise in cardiac anesthesia, pharmacology (particularly of circulatory support drugs), respiratory and ventilator management

  • Management of ICU level renal, endocrine, infectious disease, neurologic and nutritional support problem

  • Participate in morning and afternoon rounds daily in the Intensive Care

  • On call every fourth night and three weekend days per month

  • Daily Critical Care conferences and weekly specialized Fellow level conference

  • Teaching responsibilities: medical, emergency room, anesthesia, and surgical residents and students rotating through the ICU

  • Presentation of one or two lectures to the housestaff and/or nursing staff each month

  • Responsible for participating in a research project related to critical care

  • May also participate in ongoing clinical trials in the ICU, and use of the Critical Care database

  • Emphasis is placed on physiologic basis and clinical application of mechanical ventilation, physiologic and metabolic profiles, nutritional support, antimicrobial therapy, electrolyte balances, trauma pathophysiology, invasive and non-invasive hemodynamic monitoring, ICP monitoring and therapy, acid base chemistry, pulmonary physiology, ethics, and computerized application of scoring systems
