Pathology Fellowship

Cytopathology Fellowship

This one-year ACGME approved fellowship training program provides comprehensive training in all aspects of cytopathology. The Cytopathology Laboratories of Baystate Medical Center and its affiliates, Greater Springfield Pathology and Franklin Medical Center, evaluate over 100,000 cases per year, of which 8,000 are nongynecologic, including approximately 2,400 fine needle aspirations. Approximately 80% of all gynecologic specimens are currently evaluated via monolayer technology. The fellow will have exposure to ancillary techniques including flow cytometry, molecular biology, image analysis, in situ hybridization, and immunohistochemistry, with opportunity for training and performance on clinical fine needle aspirations and certification in monolayer Pap test evaluation. He/She will eventually assume junior staff signout responsibilities under faculty supervision, and will play an active role in teaching residents and medical students rotating through the Cytopathology Service. He/She will participate in the weekly cytology slide review conferences and annual cytology workshops given by faculty at local, regional and national meetings. Fellows participate in clinical research projects utilizing resources in the department as we4ll as affiliated institutions.
