Women Advancing & Achieving in Medicine

Women Advancing & Achieving in Medicine (WAAM) is an organization of Baystate Health's women physicians and mid-level providers that was formed in September 2005 with the goals of refining its members' skills in the areas of:

  • leadership

  • mentorship

  • scholarship

  • networking.


WAAM memmbership has since grown to 900 women providers.

Women Advancing & Achieving in Medicine Networking Breakfasts

Plans for 2008 - 2009

    • Open the list serve to midlevel women practitioners.

    • Integrate the WAAM faculty skills conferences into Departmental Grand Rounds for Surgery, Pediatrics, OB/GYN and EM.

    • Integrate the WAAM resident workshops into each residency conference curriculum.

    • Develop more elaborate links for the WAAM webpage.

    • Define the WAAM leadership committee obligations and responsibilities.

    • Skills-based programs that focus on academic promotions, leadership skills and information technology.

    • Increase WAAM's visibility in order to increase recruitment and promote its programs by creating a WAAM website and other promotional material in collaboration with Academic Affairs.

    • Advance academic promotions by developing a faculty mentorship program.  

    • Implement a mechanism for honoring the accomplishments of woman physicians on the BMC faculty.

    • Continue to review BMERF/BAPO gender salary equity.

    • Track financial and administrative support.

    • Continue collaboration throughout organization on programming.

    Accomplishments

    WAAM has done much to increase the involvement of its members in policy making and administrative processes, and to encourage collaboration with other professionals within the Baystate community. 

    • Developed an administrative support structure seated with Academic Affairs.

    • Developed this webpage on the BMC Academic Affairs website for program announcement, national web-links and networking.

    • Established recurrent funding streams from Academic Affairs and MSO for an annualized budget of $4000.

    • Maintained an email distribution to members.

    • Maintained a system for welcoming new women faculty and house officers to BMC.

    • Maintained an open forum for news and ideas via an email distribution list.

    • Established a formal goal of reviewing BMERF/BAPO salary gender equity

    • Show-cased nationally recognized author Leonard Sax to BMC for a small group discussion on the book title “Why Gender Matters”.

    • Sponsored our 2nd annual networking dinner for women physicians of BMC.

    • Published 3 essays in the Hamden County Medical Society newsletter:

      • Elizabeth Boyle: Maternity Leave—Not a Vacation

      • Barbara Greco: Sequencing

      • Mihaela Stefan: Managing work and home.

    • Surveyed the list serve for comments and needs of the Women Physicians at BMC.
