Director:
Michael Rosenblum, M. D.
Duration: 4 weeks
Students per month: 1
This elective provides the student with clinical exposure to a wide
variety of medical experiences relevant to the practice of general
internal medicine in the ambulatory and subspecialty settings.
This includes clinics in cardiology, dermatology, endocrinology, gastroenterology,
geriatrics (geriatric home visits), nephrology, neurology, office
gynecology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, pulmonology, rheumatology,
tuberculosis, daily urgent care clinics, and women’s health.
Morning and afternoon conferences are held daily on common diseases
in primary care and medical subspecialties.
The student works with medical interns and residents assigned to these
clinics and contributes to daily teaching conferences in the primary
care curriculum. Through conferences and clinical experience students
will better understand the principles of primary care, including clinical
epidemiology, periodic health examinations, screening for disease,
phychosocial aspects of health and illness, nutrition and medicine,
as well as in-depth discussion of common ambulatory problems.
The student is encouraged to assume responsibility for clinical decision
making at a level appropriate to his/her experience. Faculty
supervision provides ample opportunity for one-to-one teaching.
No night or weekend call during this rotation. A car is necessary
for this elective.
