Anatomic & Clinical Pathology

Director:  Jean Henneberry, MD

Duration:   4 weeks
Students per month:   1

This 4-week elective is designed to introduce the medical student to the major areas of the practice of Pathology. It will include a 2-week period in anatomic pathology and another 2-week period in clinical pathology.  In the area of anatomic pathology, the student will learn the consultative role of the pathologist in patient care by observing and participating in surgical pathology, cytopathology and autopsy pathology. In each of these large areas they will be closely supervised by faculty members. The student will attend all departmental conferences and will be expected to choose a topic during the first week for presentation during the fourth week.

The clinical pathology elective will include two of its major areas; transfusion medicine, microbiology, molecular pathology/cytogenetics, hematopathology, and clinical chemistry.  Specific areas will be chosen depending on the background and career goals of each individual student. The student will observe/participate in the selected areas under the supervision and guidance of the division directors.

At the end of this rotation, the student will be able to appreciate the many facets of the practice of pathology and the role of the pathologist as a clinical consultant, researcher and teacher.

No nights or weekends during this rotation.
