Anatomic & Clinical Pathology

This 4-week elective is designed to introduce the medical student
to the major areas of the practice of Pathology. It will
include a 2-week period in anatomic pathology and another 2-week
period in clinical pathology. In the area of anatomic
pathology, the student will learn the consultative role of the
pathologist in patient care by observing and participating in
surgical pathology, cytopathology and autopsy pathology. In
each of these large areas they will be closely supervised by
faculty members. The student will attend all departmental
conferences and will be expected to choose a topic during the
first week for presentation during the fourth week.
The clinical pathology elective will include two of its major
areas; transfusion medicine, microbiology, molecular pathology/cytogenetics,
hematopathology, and clinical chemistry. Specific areas
will be chosen depending on the background and career goals
of each individual student. The student will observe/participate
in the selected areas under the supervision and guidance of
the division directors.
At the end of this rotation, the student will be able to appreciate
the many facets of the practice of pathology and the role of
the pathologist as a clinical consultant, researcher and teacher.
No nights or weekends during this rotation.
