4th Year Electives

Clinical Cardiology

Director:  Reed Shnider, M. D.

Duration:   4 weeks
Students per month:   1

The Clinical Cardiology rotation at Baystate Medical Center is a four week elective designed to give the 4th year medical student a broad exposure to adult cardiology.  This rotation is unique in that it offers both conventional cardiology modalities such as electrophysiology, interventional and noninvasive cardiology in addition to the less conventional more diverse rehabilitation programs, allowing the student opportunities to explore integrative cardiology methods.

Week one will be dedicated to exposure to exercise and pharmacologic stress testing with further time spent with the noninvasive cardiology service reviewing both nuclear scans and echocardiograms.

Week two will expose the rotating student to the clinical cardiac electrophysiology, and the student will be placed under the service of the electrophysiology fellow and attending.  This will allow specific exposure to diagnostic and therapeutic EP procedures, as well as implantable defibrillators and pacemakers.

Week three will be devoted to multiple phases of invasive cardiology, including both diagnostic catheterization and interventional procedures.

Week four will be devoted to an elective time, to be decided between the rotating student and the consulting attending that month.  The student will be expected to attend daily conferences, which include weekly noninvasive, nuclear and invasive cardiology topics.  The student maybe asked to participate in one Journal Club presentation, usually at the end of the month.  A specific article will be reviewed by the student, discussed with the cardiology attending and fellow and then the student will present it to a conference for open discussion.

No nights or weekends during this rotation.
