4th Year Electives

Community Medicine-Community Health Center

Director:   Dorothea Von Goeler, M. D.

Duration:  4 weeks
Students per month:   1

Baystate Medical Center’s Department of Medicine offers an experience in a community health center location in Springfield ’s north end.  The health center and its staff are involved in community activities relating to all areas that effect the health of the population.

Under the direction of the Medical Director, the student will see patients with the full range of ambulatory problems and work on a team with nurse practitioners, social service and other professionals.  We have special programs for elders, HIV, prenatal care, STD’s, jail health and school health.  In addition, the student will visit community groups who deliver services to our community in order to get the full scope of community health.

The Brightwood-Riverview Health Center is the site of the Community Medicine Track of the Internal Medicine Residency Program, has a bilingual staff and serves a neighborhood that is predominately Hispanic.  This elective ideally suited to a student who is interested in the principles of community oriented primary care and who is considering work in a medical underserved community.  The emphasis is on community work rather than on ambulatory care.

This elective does not take place on the Baystate campus.  A car is recommended as Baystate cannot provide transportation to off-campus sites.

If you are interested in our 4th year elective, please submit an application.
