Baystate Medical Center invites 4th year visiting medical students interested in a career in emergency medicine to apply for a four week audition rotation.

Baystate Medical Center , the western campus of Tufts University School of Medicine, is located in Springfield , Massachusetts .  The emergency department is a Level 1 Trauma Center with greater than 100,000 patient visits annually.  It is the home of the Baystate Emergency Medicine Residency, a fully accredited, post-graduate year one through three program, accepting 12 residents in each class.  Baystate has fully accredited residencies in Medicine, Pediatrics, Medicine-Pediatrics, Surgery, Radiology and Pathology as well as multiple fellowships including Pediatric Emergency Medicine.  Springfield is strategically located in the beautiful Connecticut River valley 90 minutes west of Boston and 2.5 hours from New York City .

This opportunity would be available for visiting medical students from October through January.   The four week rotation includes 112 hours of clinical experience in all areas of the emergency department, 12 hours of structured didactic instruction specifically for rotating medical students, 16 hours of didactic instruction with the emergency medicine residents and a 4 hour journal club with emergency medicine residents and faculty.  Medical students work closely with a senior emergency medicine resident and faculty.  All students will be offered an emergency medicine faculty advisor to help in their career decisions and access to emergency medicine faculty for letters of recommendation.   Accepted students would have an interview for the emergency medicine residency arranged during their four weeks.  In addition, rotating students would be provided with free housing and parking.  They would have 24/7 access to the health sciences library, and an employee discount at the cafeteria and employee health club.

If you are interested in our 4th year elective, please submit an application and provide a letter of interest and a current medical school transcript.  Applications will be processed as they arrive and accepted students will need to register through the Tufts University School of Medicine medical education office.
