This elective will introduce the student to the clinical discipline of gastroenterology. The student completing this clerkship will be able to take an appropriate history and physical, recognize basic inpatient and outpatient gastrointestinal problems, identify major diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, and present a gastroenterology topic in-depth to those participating in the elective. The student will function as the initial consultant both in inpatient and outpatient settings. The student will observe procedures such as diagnostic and therapeutic upper endoscopy and colonoscopy, sclerotherapy and band litigation of esophageal varices, esophageal dilation, diagnostic and therapeutic ERCP, endoscopic ultrasonography, liver biopsy and ultrasound and CT scan of the abdomen. Students will participate in the weekly gastroenterology case presentation conferences which include pathology and radiology, and also a bimonthly journal club. Key components to this clerkship are an assigned gastroenterologist to assure that the student meets the clerkship objectives, ample outpatient clinic experiences, a core text of papers pertaining to gastroenterology, and a student presentation. Students will not be on call evenings when on consult service.
