Infectious Disease
Director:
Richard B. Brown, M. D.
Duration: 4 weeks
Students per month: 1
The adult Infectious Disease Division provides inpatient and
outpatient consultations to adult medical, surgical, and ob-gyn
patients. This provides the student with the opportunity
for a broad exposure to many types of infectious disease problems.
As consultant, the student has initial contact with the patient,
and is expected to formulate diagnostic and therapeutic strategies
and present them to a teaching attending for discussion and
implementation. Through such consultation and in conjunction
with exposure to the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory, the student
obtains a basic knowledge of antibiotics and common infectious
diseases.
By the end of the rotation, the student will be proficient in
interpretation of gram stains, explaining mechanisms of action
and indication for use of commonly employed antimicrobial agents,
and understanding the pathogenesis and pathophysiology of common
infectious diseases.
No nights or weekends during this rotation. THIS
ROTATION IS NON-FLEXIBLE. IT CANNOT BE DROPPED.
PLEASE CONTACT THE CLERKSHIP COORDINATOR FOR ADDITONAL INFORMATION.
