Director: Richard
A. Courtney, M. D.
Duration: 4 weeks
Students per month: 1
The purpose of this elective is to familiarize the student with
the basic principles and techniques of pediatric and med/ped
surgery. The student will be part of a team consisting
of house officers in general surgery and in pediatrics, as well
as the four attending pediatric staff surgeons. The student
will participate in all phases of the care of the pediatric
surgical patients. They will examine patients, assist
in surgery, and participate in the post-operative care of all
patients. They will also participate in the outpatient
care in the private office of the pediatric surgeons.
The facilities include an active pediatric service, including
a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit as well as a Neonatology Unit.
Students are required to be on call every third or fourth night and every third weekend. Students will have the same hours as surgical residents on the service.
This elective does not take place on the Baystate campus. A car is recommended as Baystate cannot provide transportation to off-campus sites.
