Students will participate in active evaluation of ambulatory
and hospitalized patients. They will prepare the initial
consultation evaluation for review with the attending physician.
On inpatient consults, they will participate in all activities
of the Pulmonary Division including outpatient clinics, conferences
and core curriculum discussion sessions.
Problem definition and evaluation is the basic teaching medium
and includes daily teaching attending consultation rounds
on inpatients and a separate session with faculty on ambulatory
patients. A weekly combined medical pathological chest
conference is designed to emphasize interdisciplinary discussion
of pulmonary problems. Teaching includes x-ray interpretation
and special procedures in radiology. Instruction in
the interpretation of pulmonary function test is provided.
Management of Intensive Care Unit patients with associated
blood gas and ventilation problems, including all problems
of controlled ventilation, is available.
The Pulmonary Laboratory provides complete clinical pulmonary
function evaluation, including exercise studies. There
is an active fiberoptic bronchoscopy unit. The Intensive
Care Unit provides state of the art respiratory care.
Most patients in the region with suspected tuberculosis are
evaluated at
