Renal-Electrolyte
Director:
Gregory L. Braden, M. D.
Duration: 4 weeks
Students per month: 1
This clerkship offers the student an opportunity to participate
in an active nephrology program involving acute and chronic
renal disease, fluid and electrolyte disturbances, acid-based
abnormalities, peritoneal dialysis, hemodialysis and renal
transplantation. Basic physiologic mechanisms are stressed,
particularly as they relate to clinical nephrology.
The students will see nephrology consultations and work up
new patients admitted to the clinical services. The
student presents new cases to the attending nephrologist,
and observes peritoneal dialysis and hemodialysis, renal transplantation
and renal biopsies. Review of renal pathology is also
included. Three weekly renal conferences permit active
student participation and extensive reprint files are available
as educational aids. The student is taught to perform
and interpret urinalyses and clearance measurements.
No nights or weekends during this rotation.
