Ward Medicine Subinternship
Director: Jeffrey Mulhern, MD
Duration:
4 weeks
Students per month: 1
This is a general medical subinternship with major student
responsibility for the care of hospitalized patients with
acute medical illness. As a member of the ward team
(working with a teaching attending, supervising resident and
either one or two interns), the student will admit new patients
during the day, write up and present these cases to the teaching
attending physician, and be directly responsible for all diagnostic
procedures and management decisions relating to these cases.
The student will write all orders and progress notes.
At
night the student will be part of the coverage team that handles
acute medical problems on all hospitalized medical patients
as well as taking new admissions. Considerable experience
with diagnostic and therapeutic procedures can be expected.
The subintern will learn to work efficiently and rapidly and
to trust his/her clinical skills. As a result, the student will
be much better prepared to accept the work load and responsibilities
of internship.
In addition
to direct patient care responsibilities, the subintern actively
participates in daily work rounds, presents cases and teaching
rounds (four times each week) and will have an opportunity to
attend Medical Grand Rounds and the daily subspecialty conferences.
Faculty supervision provides ample opportunity for one-on-one
teaching. Participating in "Morning Report" sessions is
encouraged. Finally, an optional weekly half day outpatient
clinic session can be arranged for interested students.
Students will be on
call not more than every 4th night and weekend.
