ANNOUNCEMENTS

e_silva Enrique J. Silva, MD Honored with Distinguished Service Award

Dr. Enrique J. Silva, Chief of Endocrinology in the Department of Medicine, received the Robert Volpé Distinguished Service Award from the Canadian Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism (CSEM) at their annual meeting in October. This is the society's highest award and recognizes both contributions to Canadian Endocrinology and to the CSEM.

Dr. Silva was President of the CSEM from 2001 - 2003, during which time his accomplishments included several important changes in the Society's governance such as, the creation of several working committees, changes to the council, and increasing membership participation in CSEM activities, as well as enhancing the annual meeting through incorporating both basic science and practice, and capturing the full spectrum of the endocrinology field. Dr. Silva has made significant contributions in thyroid hormone physiology, temperature homeostasis and energy balance research, as well as to training and educational activities in Montreal and in the McGill University community.

The late Robert Volpé was a great researcher, teacher, and physician who mentored generations of young endocrinologists from Canada and abroad.

Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship Re-Accredited for 5 Years

The Residency Review Committee (RRC) for Emergency Medicine re-accredited Baystate's fellowship in Pediatric Emergency Medicine for five years at its September 29 2006 meeting. This is a very strong endorsement of a young fellowship program at Baystate, which began with its first fellow in July 2005. The re-accreditation was in follow-up to the first site visit for the program, which occurred in May 2006.

Our Pediatric Emergency Medicine fellowship is a subprogram of the core Emergency Medicine residency program. The new accreditation will also permit the fellowship to train fellows who have completed either an emergency medicine residency or a pediatrics residency. Blake Spirko MD serves as the Program Director for this fellowship.
