Sandra Bellantonio MD, Director of the Geriatrics Fellowship Program, is Promoted to Geriatrics Section Chief

Dr. Sandra Bellantonio, Director of the Geriatrics Fellowship Program and Assistant Professor of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine, has been promoted to Geriatrics Section Chief in the Department of Medicine. After receiving her medical degree at the University of Padova School of Medicine in Italy, Dr. Bellantonio came to Baystate for residency training in Internal Medicine and went on to complete a fellowship in geriatrics at the University of Connecticut Center on Aging.


Dr. Bellantonio has been the recipient of many honors for excellence in clinical care and teaching, including the Geriatric Academic Career Award from the Health Resources Service Administration. In addition, the Department of Health and Human Services awarded her the Claude D. Pepper Older American Independence Center Research Development Award.

Chris Otis MD Appointed to American Board of Pathologists Committee

The American Board of Pathologists (ABP) announced that Chris Otis, MD, Director of Surgical Pathology, has been named to an ABP Committee to evaluate content specifications for the Maintenance of Certification (MOC) examination in Anatomic Pathology. These content specifications form the basis of the portion of the MOC examination that covers new information and developments in the practice of pathology.


Heather Sankey MD, OB-Gyn Residency Program Director, is Selected for National Educational Scholars Development Program

On January 3, 2007 Dr. Heather Sankey was one of 20 scholars inducted into the 2007-2008 class of the APGO/Solvay Pharmaceuticals Educational Scholars Development Program. Dr. Sankey was selected by the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics (APGO) from a competitive nationwide pool of applicants based on her professional credentials and demonstrated commitment to women’s health education. She has been practicing in the community for 14 years, and is serving her third year as Ob-Gyn Residency Program Director.


The rigorous 15-month program trains top physician faculty in: curriculum and instruction; measurement and evaluation; research and statistics; and leadership and management, to enable them to become outstanding educators and administrators in obstetrics and gynecology. One of the program's long term goals is that graduates share knowledge from the program within their communities.

Research Week Keynote Speaker Announced — Harry P. Selker, MD, MSPH

Dr. Harry P. Selker will be the keynote speaker at Baystate Medical Group's 8th Annual Research Week. The Keynote Address will be on May 22 at noon. Dr. Selker's professional accomplishments include:

  • Professor of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine

  • At Tufts-New England Medical Center (Tufts-NEMC) he serves as:

    • Executive Director for the Institute for Clinical Research and Health Policy Studies

    • Chief of the Division of Clinical Care Research in the Department of Medicine

    • Director of the Center for Cardiovascular Health Services Research

    • Principal Investigator of its NIH General Clinical Research Center.

  • Director of the Tufts-NEMC NRSA Postdoctoral Training Fellowship in Health Services Research/Clinical Care Research and its NIH K-30 Clinical Research Curriculum-supported MS/PhD Graduate Program in Clinical Research at the Tufts Sackler School of Graduate Biomedical Sciences

  • He has served on boards and as an officer for a variety of professional and educational organizations, including in 2003-2004 as President of the Association for Clinical Research Training.

  • He also maintains his medical practice at the Pratt Diagnostic Clinic at Tufts-NEMC.


Research Week is Tuesday, May 22 — Thursday, May 24.

The collection of work accomplished by our residents and fellows will be displayed throughout the Chestnut Conference Center. Please plan on visiting to discover the breadth of scholarly contributions our residents and fellows are making to the field of medicine.

All Cardiovascular Fellowships Receive 3-Year Re-Accreditation

Baystate Medical Center's three cardiology fellowships were re-accredited for 3 years by the Residency Review Committee for Internal Medicine. The re-accreditation was the follow-up to the program's March 2006 site visit. The fellowship programs and program directors are:

  • Cardiovascular Diseases—Mara Slawsky MD

  • Interventional Cardiology—Marc Schweiger MD

  • Electrophysiology—James Cook MD.

Endocrinology Fellowship Receives 3-Year Re-Accreditation

The fellowship in Endocrinology at Baystate Medical Center was re-accredited for 3 years by the Residency Review Committee for Internal Medicine. The re-accreditation was the follow-up to the program's March 2006 site visit. The Program Director for this fellowship program is Kamal C. Shoukri, MD.

Baystate Faculty Selected for TUSM Compassionate Care Project Advisory Group

The Tufts University School of Medicine Compassionate Care project's Advisory Group is multi-disciplinary and representative of their affiliated hospitals. Four of Baystate's faculty members were chosen from a strong and diverse pool of candidates:

  • Maura J. Brennan MD—Medicine

  • Thomas J. Campfield MD—Pediatrics

  • Robin Gottlieb MD—Physical Medicine

  • Paul G.K. Jodka MD—Medicine
