The second annual L. Randol Barker Award for achievement in medical education was awarded to Dr. Raquel Belforti for her abstract "The Impact of a Simulation Training Program on the Confidence of Residents to Lead and Perform Adult Resuscitation."

The award carried a cash prize, an expenses-paid invitation to a celebratory dinner with Division of General Internal Medicine faculty and fellows and an opportunity to present her abstract at GIM Grand Rounds.

Human Patient Simulation has Integral Role in Medical Education, but Its Effect Not Established

Human Patient Simulation (HPS), because of its safe and forgiving environment for skill mastery, has become an accepted part of medical education, but the effect of HPS training on residents’ confidence has not been determined. Belforti studied 24 second-year residents who participated in four HPS sessions focused on ACLS leadership skills.

Based on pre- and post-surveys, residents' scores improved in the following areas:

  • overall confidence

  • performing & leading cardiac arrest team

  • management of airway & equipment

  • recognition & management of cardiac rhythyms.

Belforti, along with co-researchers Drs. Mihaela Stefan, Gladys Fernandez, Michael Rosenblum, Michael Rothberg and Gerard Langlois, PA plan follow-up research to objectively evaluate residents' ability to lead ACLS through videotaped analysis by an independent observer.

Johns Hopkins GIM Offers Four Housestaff Research Awards

The other three awards are:

  • The Neil R. Powe Award which recognizes research achievement in clinical epidemiology and outcomes research.
