Richard Brown MD, Chief of Infectious Disease Division in the Department of Medicine, Awarded 2007 Weinberg Prize

Richard Brown, MD has been selected by his peers in the academic community and previous prize recipients to receive the 2007 Weinberg Prize for his outstanding achievements in medical

"I am delighted that Richard has won the Weinberg Prize—it is well deserved.  Over his many years at Baystate Medical Center as Chief of Infectious Diseases, he has excelled as a clinician, educator, and researcher."

—Burrtt L. Haag, MD
Department of Medicine
First Weinberg Prize winner, 1997

"Richard is a very deserving recipient of the Weinberg Family Prize.  He is a true “triple threat” – an enthusiastic, knowledgeable teacher (who is very “punny”), a solid clinical researcher and a leader in our Baystate community, particularly in the area of hospital epidemiology."

—Barbara Stechenberg, MD
Chief, Pediatric Infectious Disease
2006 Weinberg Prize winner

education in infectious disease and his contributions to the academic programs of Baystate Health. He was presented with a handsome plaque at the Annual Medical Staff Meeting on October 16th. Baystate Health annually awards the Weinberg Prize to a faculty members whose innovative research, publications, or leadership of a national academic organization have brought honor to Baystate Health.

Honored for Achievements During His 31 Year Career at Baystate

In addition to Dr. Brown's many publications and past membership on several national review boards, he is also the Medical Director of both Travel Medicine and Infusion and Respiratory Services at Baystate. He currently serves on the review boards for CHEST and Clinical Infectious Diseases and on the Editorial Board for Infectious Disease Practice journal. Dr. Brown is also co-author of Clinical Problems in Infectious Disease (now in its fifth edition, published in 2006).

"Baystate Health, from Mark Tolosky on down, recognizes the importance of academics — that it’s not only patient satisfaction and clinical excellence that are needed to elevate the institution to the top levels of the health system."

Brown says that it is extremely satisfying to be recognized for his cumulative work during his years at Baystate, explaining that he thinks of the prize, "...more like a 'lifetime achievement award' than an Oscar." Although he considers receiving the prize a great honor, Brown doesn’t think it will impact his work. He believes that he, like most faculty who work towards academic excellence, is not so much driven by extrinsic awards as by internal motivations, such as striving to increase his knowledge and impart it to others.

In addition, Brown feels fortunate to work in an environment with many academically-motivated clinicians and in a system where academic excellence is recognized and encouraged.
