BMC Has 100% Success in 2008 Categorical Residency Match

28, 737 Appplicants Makes It the Largest Match Ever

In the 2008 National Resident Matching Program, the 9 participating Baystate Medical Center residencies had a 100% success rate in categorical resident matches. "The success of all of our programs in the match underscores the attractiveness of our residency programs and of Baystate as an academic medical center," says Hal Jenson, MD, the Designated Institutional Official for Baystate's graduate medical education programs.

Overall, 28,737 applicants vied for one of 22,240 first-year residency positions—the most first-year residency positions in history with 395 positions added this year. Of those applicants, a record-high 15,242 were U.S. medical school seniors, and 94.2% successfully matched to a residency program. In fact, 84.6% of those seniors matched to one of their top three program choices.

General orientation for these new residents and fellows begins Friday June 28, 2008, with orientation in each Program on June 31, 2008. They start their new programs on July 1.
