FEATURE Grand Opening for Baystate Medical Center's Renovated Simulation Center and Goldberg Surgical Skills Lab 4,000 Square Foot Facility Is Nearly Triple Its Former Size
On July 22nd, Baystate Medical Center cut the ribbon on the newly rennovated Simulation Center and Goldberg Surgical Skills Lab. The $700,000 expansion, completed in April, provides 3 simulation rooms that may be variously configured as an operating room, emergency room, PACU, ICU or patient room, as well as a control room with state-of-the art computer, audiovisual and teleconferencing equipment. The rennovation enhances the capability to train larger teams. The expanded Goldberg Sugical Skills Lab accommodates an increased number and variety of bench-top task training devices and computer-assisted procedural task training tools. Residents can train on more than 50 types of procedures, from laparoscopic surgery to surgical knot tying. According to Neal Seymour MD, Simulation Center Director, the expansion puts Baystate at the forefront of medical training—it is one of only 27 simulation centers in the world that is accredited by the American College of Surgeons. It is also one of the first civilian hospitals to have an iStan, a wireless patient simulator with a human skeleton that was developed for the military. Anticipating that the enhancements might increase demand for simulation training, Dr. Gladys Fernandez, Manager of Simulation Progams, will be presenting a seminar on developing simulation curriculum on September 15th.
