Baystate Residency Academic Seminar Series (BRASS)

Covers Core Interdisciplimary Topics Across all Residencies

BRASS is a Graduate Medical Education Committee-led effort to ensure that all Baystate residencies and fellowships cover all ACGME core educational requirements. The combined lecture series also gives residents an opportunity to interact across disciplines. The spectrum of topics is broad and includes challenging issues such as professionalism concerns regarding physician fatigue; sexual harassment; medical errors and apology; teaching skills; and the role of the IRB in resident research.

"Instead of just teaching about medical errors in the abstract, this is a way to make it real. For example: Your patient is in a johnny, scared and vulnerable–you are sleep deprived. In this situation, how might you change your behavior to avoid medical errors?"

According to Dr. Samuel Borden, Chair of GMEC's Resident Curriculum Committee, BRASS "offers us an economy of scale, so that each residency and fellowship doesn’t have to put together individual lectures to cover these topics." On the other hand, each program can decide which sessions will be required for their residents, allowing a program with a strong curriculum in a particular area to forego requiring their residents to attend the corresponding BRASS session. However, Dr. Borden anticipates that the majority of programs will require their residents to attend the majority of seminars.

BRASS's first session will be held on August 20 and repeated on September 3. The full schedule is available on the Academic Affairs area of eWorkplace. For more information, contact Toni Bruso, Academic Affairs Staff Assistant, by phone at 413.322.4243 or by email.

CIS Offers Clinical Trial Alert

New Tool Promotes Communication Between Care Providers and Investigators

Effective July 9, 2008, CIS offers a new clinical trials tool designed to alert care providers to a patient’s participation in a clinical trial, notify investigators and research staff of admissions, transfers, and discharges of trial participants, and to provide a means for investigators to provide care providers with important trial information such as contraindicated medications and contact information.

Web-based training for this feature is available on eWorkplace by going to Departments → CIS → CIS WBT Training Modules → Clinical Trials.  You can also download a quick summary brochure in pdf format.

How To Utilize The CIS Clinical Trials Alert Tool

The first step to utilize this feature for your IRB approved trial is to provide the HRPP/IRB staff with the information necessary to “build” the trial in the system.  For details, please contact either Maureen Noftall by email or phone at 794-8102, or Karen Christianson by email or phone at 794-5714.
