NEWS Midwifery Education Program Transitions to 5-Semester Curriculum Concurrent Master's Degree Offered in Collaboration with Midwifery Institute of Philadelphia University
Beginning Fall 2008, Baystate Medical Center's Midwifery Education Program (MEP) is transitioning to a 5-semester curriculum. Through affiliation with the Midwifery Institute of Philadelphia University, which offers distance-based master's completion, the MEP will incorporate concurrent master's degree study within its 5-semester curriculum. Students from the final year long certificate program are graduating December 12, 2008, and the first class of students participating in this new collaborative curriculum were admitted in September.
Representatives from the Midwifery Institute of Philadelphia University recently visited Baystate's midwives and students to inaugurate the affiliation. The MEP is accredited through 2017 by the American Council for Midwifery Education (Formerly the American College of Nurse-Midwives Division of Accreditation.) Baystate's 5th Annual Surgery Symposium Focuses on Simulated Surgical Learning Environments 3 Patient Simulation Practicums Were Featured On November 14th, the Department of Surgery and the Baystate Simulation Center and Goldberg Surgical Skills Lab hosted a day-long surgery symposium. Six guest presenters from as far as Florida, Minneapolis and Washington state spoke about aspects of incorporating simulation-based training into current educational curricula, including Dr. Tomothy Broderick from NASA's Extreme Environment Mission Operations, who talked about preparing for surgery in space.
In addition, 3 interactive practicums gave attendees an opportunity to participate in simulated situations such as an OR crisis, immersive virtual environments, and team training for surgeons. More than 70 particpants from all over New England attended the symposium. |
