Thomas Campfield MD, Department of Pediatrics, Recipient of the First Annual Tsacoyeanes Pediatric Renal Research Award National Kidney Foundation's Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Vermont Affiliate offered this $30,000 one-year, non-renewable award for the first time this year. It is funded by a generous contribution from the Tsacoyeanes family earmarked for an additional award with the same goals and eligibility criteria as NKF's existing Pediatric Renal Research Award. The award will fund part of Dr. Campfield's 20-year research focusing on hypertension and renal impairment in adults who were premature infants. The new project will study the ontogeny of urinary osteopontin excretion, assess the physiologic importance of low urinary osteopontin excretion in premature infants, investigate a pharmacologic intervention that might correct this developmental deficiency and study tissue expression of factors that regulate osteopontin expression. According to Campfield, the work will lead to increased understanding of this complication of prematurity and may lead to clinical strategies that will preserve renal function in these vulnerable infants. Dr. Gregory Braden, Deparment of Medicine, Division of Nephrology, is part of Campfield's collaborative team.
