FEATURE Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Set to Start in July 2008 The 2-Year Fellowship Program Will Accept 1-2 Fellows Each Year A new fellowship in Critical Care Medicine is accepting applications for its first Fellow to start in July 2008. Then, up to 2 fellows will be accepted per year until a maximum of 3 fellows are enrolled. Mark Tidswell MD, in the Critical Care Division of the Department of Medicine, will serve as the Program Director.
The goal of the Critical Care Medicine Fellowship is to teach a multidisciplinary approach to patients who are critically ill. Taking full advantage of existing academic faculty, research programs and prior experience training Critical Care Anesthesiology fellows, this new fellowship will have rotations in medical intensive care, surgical intensive care, cardiology ICU, anesthesia, research and electives. The Fellows participate in attending rounds with intensivists, trauma physicians and faculty from the Departments of Medicine, Surgery and Anesthesiology. According to Dr. Tidswell, "Although this fellowship is similar to the Critical Care Anesthesiology Fellowship, it will be tailored for Internal Medicine residency graduates." Significant Addition to Baystate's Training Programs Offering this fellowship at Baystate, according to Dr. Thomas Higgins, former Program Director of the Critical Care Anesthesiology Fellowship, adds a missing element in the range of subspecialty training programs, improves patient care by adding fellowship supervision, and helps grow Baystate's ICU research program. |
