ANNOUNCEMENTS
Peter Lindenauer MD, Receives 2008 Excellence in Research Award from the Society of Hospital Medicine The Excellence in Research award is presented in recognition of outstanding achievement by a researcher in the discipline of hospital medicine. The Awards Committee evaluates candidates using the following criteria:
Gladys Fernandez MD, Department of Surgery, Winner of Zucker Clinical Teaching Prize for Outstanding Innovation Dr. Gladys Fernandez, instructor at the Baystate Simulation Center, was chosen by her peers for this prize because of the exemplary dedication and creativity she has brought to the teaching of surgery. According to Michael Rosenblatt, MD, Dean of Tufts University School of Medicine, Dr. Fernandez has "set the standard for teaching, and (her) standard is high indeed."
The prize, including a $2,500 award, will be presented at the annual Clinician Educator Leadership Dinner at Tufts on June 12, 2008. Dr. Sarah Perez McAddo, Department of Obstetrics-Gynecology, Receives Velji Award for Teaching Excellence in Global Health
Sarah Perez McAddo, MD, MPH is the recipient of the 2008 Velji Award for Teaching Excellence in Global Health. The Velji Awards are named in honor of Drs. Anvar and Pari Velji, both of whom were born in African villages with very impoverished health care systems. The Drs. Velji later committed themselves to a lifetime of working to improve the healthcare of all human beings, regardless of their origins, through better education. Dr. Anvar Velji is also a co-founder of GHEC. Velji award winners, who must be Global Health Education Consortium (GHEC) members, receive a plaque, $1000, and recognition on GHEC's website. Anthony Poindexter MD, Division of Nephrology, Receives Outstanding Teaching Award Springfield College's Physician Assistant Program's class of 2008 selected Anthony Poindexter, MD to receive the class's Outstanding Teaching Award. he has also been invited him to give the keynote address at the program's graduation ceremony. According to Jennifer Hixon DHSc, Program Director of the Springfield College Physician Assistant Program, "He has been teaching in the program for many years and always makes a major impact on the students!" Drs. Richard Courtney and Barry Sachs Awarded 2008 Community Clinician of the Year Award Awards Were Presented at Hampden District Medical Society's Annual Meeting on April 29th The award recognizes practitioners who have made significant contributions to patients and the community. Drs. Courtney and Sachs, both of the Division of Pediatric Surgery, have been pioneers in the surgical community and stanch advocates for children. This year's Keynote Address, "Authenticity and Authorship: The Resident's Jouney," will be given by David C. Leach, MD, former Executive Director of the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), at noon on Tuesday, May 20, 2008 in Chestnut 1. During Research Week, poster presentations are on display throughout the Chestnut Conference Center. Please visit, learn, and recognize the breadth of scholarly activities of our residents and fellows and some of the contributions by Baystate Medical Center investigators to the field of medicine.
