Peter Lindenauer, MD Winner of Excellence in Research Award

Dr. Lindenauer Receiving Society of Hospital Medicine Award in San Diego

Peter Lindenauer MD, Receives 2008 Excellence in Research Award from the Society of Hospital Medicine


The Excellence in Research award is presented in recognition of outstanding achievement by a researcher in the discipline of hospital medicine.


The Awards Committee evaluates candidates using the following criteria:

  • Additional research training & experience

  • Peer-reviewed publications

  • Intra and extramural funding for research

  • National presentations in research area.

Gladys Fernandez MD, Department of Surgery, Winner of Zucker Clinical Teaching Prize for Outstanding Innovation


Dr. Gladys Fernandez, instructor at the Baystate Simulation Center, was chosen by her peers for this prize because of the exemplary dedication and creativity she has brought to the teaching of surgery. According to Michael Rosenblatt, MD, Dean of Tufts University School of Medicine, Dr. Fernandez has "set the standard for teaching, and (her) standard is high indeed."

 

The prize, including a $2,500 award, will be presented at the annual Clinician Educator Leadership Dinner at Tufts on June 12, 2008.

Dr. Sarah Perez McAddo, Department of Obstetrics-Gynecology, Receives Velji Award for Teaching Excellence in Global Health

 

Sarah Perez McAddo, MD, MPH is the recipient of the 2008 Velji Award for Teaching Excellence in Global Health. The Velji Awards are named in honor of Drs. Anvar and Pari Velji, both of whom were born in African villages with very impoverished health care systems. The Drs. Velji later committed themselves to a lifetime of working to improve the healthcare of all human beings, regardless of their origins, through better education. Dr. Anvar Velji is also a co-founder of GHEC.


Velji award winners, who must be Global Health Education Consortium (GHEC) members, receive a plaque, $1000, and recognition on GHEC's website.

Anthony Poindexter MD, Division of Nephrology, Receives Outstanding Teaching Award


Springfield College's Physician Assistant Program's class of 2008 selected Anthony Poindexter, MD to receive the class's Outstanding Teaching Award. he has also been invited him to give the keynote address at the program's graduation ceremony. According to Jennifer Hixon DHSc, Program Director of the Springfield College Physician Assistant Program, "He has been teaching in the program for many years and always makes a major impact on the students!"

Drs. Richard Courtney and Barry Sachs Awarded 2008 Community Clinician of the Year Award

Awards Were Presented at Hampden District Medical Society's Annual Meeting on April 29th


The award recognizes practitioners who have made significant contributions to patients and the community.  Drs. Courtney and Sachs, both of the Division of Pediatric Surgery, have been pioneers in the surgical community and stanch advocates for children. 

New Reports on Graduate Medical Education


The Council on Graduate Medical Education has just released two reports:

  • The 18th report, "New Paradigms for Physician Training for Improving Access to Health Care", which calls for the expansion of programs that encourage physicians to serve in areas of high medical need, the expansion of loan programs that channel physicians to underserved areas, and the establishment of a national medical school or system of schools.

  • The 19th report, "Enhancing Flexibility in Graduate Medical Education", which calls for an increasing in funded GME positions by at least 15%, with funding directed to innovative training models and with flexibility as to sites of training.

The reports are posted on the COGME web site, http://www.cogme.gov/pubs.htm.

9th Annual Baystate Research Week May 20 - 23, 2008

Keynote Address Explores the Resident's Journey


This year's Keynote Address, "Authenticity and Authorship: The Resident's Jouney," will be given by David C. Leach, MD, former Executive Director of the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), at noon on Tuesday, May 20, 2008 in Chestnut 1. 


During Research Week, poster presentations are on display throughout the Chestnut Conference Center. Please visit, learn, and recognize the breadth of scholarly activities of our residents and fellows and some of the contributions by Baystate Medical Center investigators to the field of medicine.

Updated Policy on Food & Drinks in the Health Sciences Library


Library patrons will be permitted to bring food and drink to the library in small quantities and under the following guidelines:

  • Beverages are permitted provided they are in a bottle with a cap, a cup with a lid, or in a soft drink can

  • Food in limited quantities such as light snacks or small items of packaged food are allowed.  Cooked meals or foods that are greasy, messy or smelly are not allowed. 

  • Clean it up/throw it awayHelp us keep the library clean by discarding all wrappers in the proper trash receptacles.  Any left over food should be deposited in the trash cans by the Chestnut Friendly’s.  If a spill occurs, please wipe it up and notify the library staff so furniture and carpeting are properly treated.

  • Eating non-snack foods.  The library reserves the right to ask anyone eating non-snack foods or food about which the library staff  has received complaints, to finish their food outside the library.
