ANNOUNCEMENTS TUSM Excellence in Teaching Citation Nominations Announced Third-Year Medical Students Nominate More Than 120 Baystate Residents and Physicians Through the Tufts University School of Medicine (TUSM) standardized evaluation process, third-year students identify excellent teachers during their core clerkships. The following Baystate Medical Center physicians were nominated in 2007-2008 in recognition of their dedication and effectiveness as educators. Lindsay Grossman, MD Appointed New Chair of Department of Pediatrics Dr. Grossman comes to Baystate Health from the University of Maryland Hospital where she was the Director of Pediatric Ambulatory Programs, Chief of the Subspecialty Consortium, and Director of the Children with Special Health Care Needs Program. She also served as the Assistant Program Director of the Pediatrics Residency and was Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Maryland. Her programmatic and research interests are in addressing the issues of children with special needs. She began her tenure on October 1st. Dr. Grossman received her medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine, followed by residency training at the University of Maryland Hospital. She completed a fellowship in General Pediatrics at John Hopkins University and Sinai Hospital of Maryland. Edward O. Reiter MD, Former Chair of the Department of Pediatrics, Presented with American Heart Association's 2008 Ralph E. Gianelly Award The Greater Pioneer Valley Heart Board honored Dr. Reiter, who was Chair of Baystate's Pediatrics Department for 26 years, with this prestigious award in recognition of his career as an outstanding clinican and educator, world-renowned pediatric endocrinologist, physician scientist, and children's advocate. The Ralph E. Gianelly Award, which recognizes the accomplishments of one who has been actively involved in the community, is named in honor of one of Springfield's most revered cardiologists. The award was presented at the Annual Western Massachusetts Heart Ball on October 17th. Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program Re-accredited for 4 Years The RRC for Obstetrics and Gynecology re-accredited Baystate's Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program for 4 years at its October 2nd meeting. The next RRC site visit is scheduled for October 2012. Heather Sankey, MD serves as the Ob-Gyn Residency Program Director. Anesthesiology Residency Program Re-accredited for 3 Years Baystate's Anesthesiology Residency Program was re-accredited for 3 years at the RRC for Anesthesiology's October 2 meeting. The next RRC site visit is scheduled for October 2011. Prasad Kilaru, MD serves as the Program Director for the Anesthesiology Residency. Pain Management Fellowship Program Re-accredited for 2 Years Also at the RRC for Anesthesiology's October 2 meeting, Baystate's Pain Management Fellowship was re-accredited for 2 years. The next RRC site visit is scheduled for October 2010. Ravi Narasimhan, MD is the Program Director for the Pain Management Fellowship. Critical Care Medicine Anesthesiology Fellowship Program Re-accredited for 4 Years The RRC for Anesthesiology also re-accredited Baystate's fellowship program in Critical Care Medicine—Anesthesiology for 4 years at its October 2 meeting. The next RRC site visit is scheduled for October 2012. Paul Jodka, MD serves as the Program Director for the fellowship program. Norman S. Stearns, MD Grant to Promote Education in Ethics and Professionalism Call for Proposals Letters of Intent Due December 15, 2008 The grant is designed to promote and support teaching and learning innovations developed by our faculty that will enhance student and resident education in Ethics and Professionalism. Innovations in Education Intramural Grant Program Call for Proposals Letters of Intent Due December 15, 2008 This program, now in its fifth year, is designed to promote and support teaching innovations developed by Tufts University School of Medicine faculty that will enhance the core educational programs and overall mission of TUSM, including the Sackler School of Graduate Biomedical Sciences. Applications for the Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in American Medicine (ELAM) Program for Women Due January 31, 2009 ELAM is the nation's only in-depth program focused on preparing senior women faculty at schools of medicine, dentistry and public health to move into positions of institutional leadership where they can effect positive change. Collaborative Biomedical Research (CBR) Program Call for Proposals Due November 14th Research projects that have co-principal investigators from both UMass Amherst and Baystate Medical Center are eligible to apply.
