FEATURE Baystate Applies for Human Research Protection Program Accreditation
Baystate has applied to the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs (AAHRPP) for accreditation of its human subjects research program. The goal of accreditation is to strengthen those systems at Baystate that are involved in protecting participants in research. The accreditation process requires organizations to take a comprehensive look at their human research protection programs (HRPPs) in comparison to accreditation principles and standards, to identify and address any weaknesses, and to build upon strengths. The result is a more comprehensive and cohesive HRPP with effective systems in place to protect research participants and to advance research.
Accreditation is a stepped process. Baystate has completed the first steps: (1) a self-assessment and program re-design with an expert consultant; and (2) the submission of a program overview, policies, forms, and other materials to AAHRPP for review. AAHRPP will provide feedback on the submitted materials within approximately 60 days, Baystate will make any necessary revisions and re-submit, and a site visit will be scheduled. Site visitors come from AAHRPP itself and other accredited organizations and review HRPP and IRB files, selected investigator files, and interview institutional leadership, HRPP and IRB staff, IRB members, and investigators with the goal of determining whether or not the written program has been translated into an effective HRPP. AAHRPP is an independent, non-profit accrediting body whose accreditation assures those involved in research - from subjects to researchers to sponsors - that an HRPP has met rigorous standards for quality and protection. For more information, please contact Karen Christianson by e-mail or phone at 413. 794.5714 or visit the AAHRPP website. |
