ANNOUNCEMENTS TUSM President Search Committee Embarking on "Listening Tour" The TUSM Board of Trustees has formed a search committee to assist them in selecting the next president. The search committee is embarking on a "listening tour" to meet with key constituents across the Tufts community. The meeting with the medical school community is scheduled for April 5 at 4:00 pm in Behrakis Auditorium. The committee will synthesize feedback from the "listening tour" to share with prospective candidates, and to establish criteria for evaluating the skills and experience of presidential candidates. Rosetta Stone Language Learning Software for Spanish Now Available in the Health Sciences Library The Library has 1 laptop loaded with Rosetta Stone for Spanish (Latin America). The Laptop is loaned with a booklet, microphone/headset, powercord and carrying case. Rosetta Stone has 5 language levels; each level contains 4 units which require 6 - 8 hours to complete. Rosetta Stone is highly dynamic and very visual. Voice recognition software helps the learner develop proper pronunciation. To Borrow the Rosetta Stone Laptop The Rosetta Stone Laptop may be borrowed for one week. The design of the software requires the Library to register each learner and assign a language level. Learners may renew the Laptop if no one has placed a reservation by the due date. To make a reservation to borrow the Laptop, contact the Health Sciences Library at 4-1865 or email library@baystatehealth.org. Ken Frankel MD Fund for Collaborative Surgical Education Letters of Intent Due April 15 Support for this grant comes from an endowment established at Baystate Health Foundation, Inc. by the family and friends of Dr. Kenneth M. Frankel as a tribute to his professional accomplishments and the value he placed on cross-disciplinary approaches to patient care. Grant support will be provided in the amount of up to $10,000 per year. Application Process Letters of intent as well as formal grant applications may be submitted by any Baystate employee. However, the proposed research must involve surgical personnel and at least one other non-surgical group, including but not limited to other departments, nursing personnel, allied health personnel, etc. It is advisable to have co-principal investigators from surgery and at least one other field. ProceduresConsult Trial Available Through July 2010 ProceduresConsult, an Elsevier product, appears to be a very high quality, ancillary training option for procedures that could be used by residents and fellows in many programs. The purpose of the trial period is to rigorously test ProceduresConsult and solicit detailed resident and fellow feedback so that a decision can be made whether the value of the product justifies its cost. Nominations for the Annual Award for Outstanding Achievements in Clinical Research Due April 16, 2010 Research Assistants, Regulatory Specialists, Coordinators and Managers Are Eligible The Award for Outstanding Achievements in Clinical Research recognizes the outstanding contribution of a research staff member to either the conduct of clinical research within Baystate (systems contribution) or to the field (regional or national recognition). It is awarded to a research staff member who not only excels at his or her own job performance, but makes a larger contribution to research by either recognizing and taking action to solve systems issues that impact the conduct of clinical research at Baystate or by demonstrating their knowledge, leadership, and skills at a regional or national level. Nominating Process Submit nominations for this award by April 16, 2010 to HRPP Integrity and Education Specialist, Marybeth Kennedy. Nominations should include the name, title, division of the nominee as well as a narrative description of rationale for the nomination. Nominees will be asked to provide a current CV and other background materials as appropriate. Nominations for 12th Annual Schwartz Center Compassionate Caregiver Award Due April 16, 2010 This prestigious award honors Massachusetts caregivers who display extraordinary compassion in caring for patients. Any paid, employed caregiver or team of caregivers with direct contact with patients in any Massachusetts health care setting is eligible. Research Week 2010: May 18 - May 21 Abstract Submission Deadline is April 19 Research Week abstracts will only be accepted through the online submission form on eWorkplace. All submissions must have IRB or IACUC approval or exemption. All research conducted at Baystate Medical Center can be submitted for Research Week. However, only residents and fellows are eligible for awards. Awards will be given for:

If you have any questions, please contact Aryn Breveleri at 794-1117 or aryn.breveleri@baystatehealth.org Collaborative Biomedical Research (CBR) Program Call for Proposals Due April 19 The Collaborative Biomedical Research Program funds and fosters basic research collaborations between UMass Amherst and Baystate Medical Center. The goal of the CBR Program is to enhance collaborative research between Baystate Medical Center clinicians and the University of Massachusetts Amherst faculty. Eligible research projects must have two Co-Principal Investigators, one each from UMass Amherst and Baystate Medical Center. CBR Research Grants provide initial support for physicians and scientists to collaborate on a biomedical project. The funds are intended to serve as "seed funds" to help the collaborative team develop preliminary data and a track record of collaboration for competitive extramural funding applications.
