Research Mentors Sought for the Summer Student Scholar Program at Baystate Medical Center

Applications Due March 19

The Summer Student Scholar Program offers faculty with research in medical, biomedical, public health, or behavioral health research opportunities to serve as mentors for students who are exploring the potential of medical and research careers. It is sponsored by Baystate Medical Center and the University of Massachusetts Amherst through the Collaborative Biomedical Research (CBR) program.

10-Week Program Matches Research Interests of Mentors and Students

The Summer Student Scholar Program offers students the opportunity to be mentored by a full-time faculty member of Tufts University School of Medicine or the University of Massachusetts Amherst while participating in medical research that is designed for them but is part of their mentor's larger project.

The program runs from May 31– August 6, 2010. The CBR provides a $3,500 stipend and a seminar series on research methodologies. Students present their research hypotheses and specific aims at the end of the first week and their results at the conclusion of the program to students, faculty, and mentors.

Several faculty mentors with active research projects that could involve a student during the summer are needed. More information is available on the Summer Scholar Program page of the CBR website. If you are interested in being a research mentor for this program, please complete and submit the online application form. Collaborative Biomedical Research (CBR) Program

Call for Proposals Due April 19

The Collaborative Biomedical Research Program funds and fosters basic research collaborations between UMass Amherst and Baystate Medical Center. The goal of the CBR Program is to enhance collaborative research between Baystate Medical Center clinicians and the University of Massachusetts Amherst faculty. Eligible research projects must have two Co-Principal Investigators, one each from UMass Amherst and Baystate Medical Center.

CBR Research Grants provide initial support for physicians and scientists to collaborate on a biomedical project. The funds are intended to serve as "seed funds" to help the collaborative team develop preliminary data and a track record of collaboration for competitive extramural funding applications. The CBR Program accepts proposals in April for June awards.

Visit the CBR site for complete proposal guidelines.
