Winthrop Whitcomb, MD Inducted as 1 of 3 Inaugural “Masters in Hospital Medicine"


The First SHM Masters in Hospital Medicine

Dr. Winthrop Whitcomb, Department of Internal Medicine, was inducted by the Society of Hospital Medicine as 1 of 3 founding and inaugural “Masters in Hospital Medicine” at its annual meeting in Washington DC. The other 2 inductees were John Nelson MD and Robert Watcher MD. They were honored for their visionary contributions for improving hospital medicine and serving as pioneering leaders in this emerging field.


The Masters in Hospital Medicine (MHM) represents the highest honor in hospital medicine. “The Masters in Hospital Medicine designation is the 'Hall of Fame' of hospital medicine," says SHM Chief Executive Officer Laurence Wellikson, MD, SFHM.


A practicing hospitalist for 16 years, Dr. Whitcomb is the Medical Director of Healthcare Quality and is Physician Advisor on Quality Initiatives for the Society of Hospital Medicine. Beginning in 1994, Dr. Whitcomb took his experience as director of the nation's first 24/7 onsite hospitalist program and created a widely emulated model for an ideal hospitalist program. He authored the award-winning Hospitalists: A Guide to Building and Sustaining a Successful Program with Joe Miller and John Nelson. His pioneering efforts include, working to achieve certification for hospitalists through the American Board of Internal Medicine, creator and inaugural editor of The Hospitalist, the first publication devoted exclusively to hospital medicine. In 1996, he cofounded the Society of Hospital Medicine.

Society of Hospital Medicine Inducts Christine Bryson, DO as Fellow in Hospital Medicine (FHM)


This designation was given to Dr. Bryson, Department of Internal Medicine, at SHM's annual meeting in Washington, DC. This honor is bestowed on those who have demonstrated their commitment to hospital medicine and quality improvement practices in the hospital setting.

Midwifery Education Program Graduates Its 17th Class

On May 7, 2010 Leela Joy and Amanda Molter graduated from the Midwifery Education Program (MEP). This is the first graduation since MEP began its collaboration with the Midwifery Institute of Philadelphia University that allows students to earn a Master of Science degree at the same time they are completing their Certificate in Nurse-Midwifery. Both graduates passed the national certification exam administered by the American Midwifery Certification Board on their first attempt.  MEP has a 100% first-time pass rate for its graduates, compared to the national pass rate of approximately 85%. The Baystate Medical Center Midwifery Education Program is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education (ACME) through 2017.

Rachana Singh, MD Earns MS in Clinical Research Through the Tufts Clinical and Translation Science Graduate Program


On May 23, 2010 Dr. Rachana Singh, Department of Pediatrics, graduated from the Clinical and Translation Science Graduate Program with a concentration in Clinical Investigation. Her thesis is titled, “Association of necrotizing enterocolitis with anemia and packed red blood cell transfusions in preterm infants.” The Graduate Program is intended for those trained in the medical sciences, primarily fully-trained physicians, but also for other doctorally prepared clinicians who have completed their clinical training.

Anju Bhagavan, MD Selected for Southeast Center of Excellence in Geriatric Medicine Resident Award Summit


Anju Bhagavan MD, Internal Medicine PG1 resident, was selected by the leadership of SCEGM to participate in the 7th Annual SCEGM Resident Award Summit based on her nomination by Kevin HInchey MD, Internal Medicine Residency Program Director. The summit is an opportunity for select residents in Internal and Family Medicine programs to learn about the impact of an aging society on the practice of medicine. SCEGM provides awardees with round-trip travel, 1 night’s hotel stay and meals. The SCEGM, a joint program of Emory University and the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), was established in 1998 to promote the career development of physicians as clinician educators and researchers.

The Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW) Approves Renewal of Baystate Medical Center’s Animal Welfare Assurance


As of April 27, 2010 OLAW has reviewed and approved the renewal of Baystate Medical Center’s Animal Welfare Assurance (Assurance) that was submitted in compliance with the Public Health Service (PHS) Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. An Assurance approved by OLAW commits the institution and its personnel to full compliance with the PHS Policy.


As a condition of receipt of PHS support for research involving laboratory animals, institutions must provide a written Assurance to OLAW describing the means they will employ to comply with the PHS Policy. Each Assurance is a detailed document tailored to the individual institution’s needs, research practices, and procedures.

Summer Student Scholar Program Has Accepted 11 Undergraduates & 3 Medical Students for Its 2010 Program


The 10‑week summer program offers the students the opportunity to participate a research project from start to finish and present project outcomes to the scientific community. Students also receive formal classroom training and personalized application in research design, implementation, and publication. Final Presentations will be held on August 6, 2010 at 9:00 am - noon in Chesnut 3. If you wish to attend, please RSVP to Aryn Breveleri at aryn.breveleri@baystatehealth.org or 794-1117.
