Andrew Artenstein, MD New Chair of Department of Medicine


Andrew Artenstein, MDDr. Andrew Artenstein will join Baystate Medical Center as Chair of the Department of Medicine on September 4, 2012.

Dr. Artenstein is currently the Chair of Medicine at Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island. He is also Director of the Center for Biodefense and Emerging Pathogens there. He is Professor of Medicine and Professor of Health Services Policy and Practice at the Warren Albert Medical School of Brown University.

Dr. Artenstein received his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine, and completed his residency and a fellowship in Infectious Diseases at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC.

 

Michael Rosenblum, MD Appointed Program Director of Internal Medicine Residency


Michael Rosenblum, MDDr. Michael Rosenblum will assume the responsibilities of Internal Medicine Residency Program Director effective August 6, 2012. Dr. Rosenblum has served as an associate program director for the IM residency since 2006. He succeeds Kevin Hinchey, MD who recently became Baystate's Senior Vice President and Chief Academic Officer.

Rosenblum completed his Internal Medicine residency at Baystate Medical Center, joined the full-time faculty in 2003, and became the Medical Director at High Street Health Center in 2008. He has achieved national recognition for his work in the Educational Innovations Program (EIP) in collaboration with Tufts University School of Medicine.

 

Summer Student Scholar Program Accepts 5 Undergraduates & 2 Medical Students into 2012 Program


The 10‑week summer program offers the students the opportunity to participate a research project from start to finish and present project outcomes to the scientific community. Students also receive formal classroom training and personalized application in research design, implementation, and publication.

Lesha Shah, MD Awarded APA Fellowship in Public Sector Psychiatry


Lesha Shah, MDDr. Lesha Shah is one of ten psychiatry residents from the US and Canada selected for the American Psychiatric Association Fellowship in Public Sector Psychiatry.

The fellowship, which Dr. Shah will participate in during her PGY3 and PGY4 years, contributes to the professional development of residents who have a substantial interest in, and show significant promise as, leaders in the field of public sector psychiatry.

Fellows serve on APA committees and prepare a series of workshops for the Annual Meeting of the Institute of Psychiatric Services. 

 

Health Sciences Library's Loretta Grikis, MLS Serves as Panel Member at Humanities Forum


LOretta Grikis, MLSLoretta Grikis, Reference Librarian, and others from the Maine Humanities Council participated in a panel entitled: "New England Forum:  The Humanities and Civil Society" in Cambridge on July 17, 2012. The panel, sponsored by the New England Forum of the American Academy Commission on the Humanities and Social Sciences, addressed the benefits of humanities studies throughout lifelong learning.

Ms. Grikis spoke of her experiences as coordinator for Baystate’s Literature and Medicine program, and shared testimonials from some physicians and other participants. David Sutter, former Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, and Philip Bredesen Jr, former governor of Tennesee, were among the commission members present to hear the testimony.

 

Margot Malachowski, MLS to Serve on Executive Board for the Massachusetts Library System


Margot Malachowski, MLSMargot Malachowski, Outreach Librarian, is serving a three-year term on the Executive Board for the Massachusetts Library System.  Ms. Malachowski is the Executive Board liaison for the Resource Sharing Committee, which will be investigating state-wide purchasing of e-books and online newspaper subscriptions for use by all libraries.

The mission of the Massachusetts Library System, which provides services to 1700 libraries of all types and sizes, is to foster cooperation, communication, innovation and sharing so that library services are enhanced for those who live, work, or study in Massachusetts. 

 

Mary Ann Lutat New Academic Affairs Staff Assistant


Mary Ann LutatMary Lutat started as staff assistant in Academic Affairs on July 18, 2012, coming to Baystate from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. She will be supporting Resident and Student Affairs, the Human Research Protection Program, Research Integrity Officer, Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Sponsored Programs Administration.

 

Drs. Booker Bush and Daniel Landry Receive Martin I. Broder, MD Teacher of the Year Awards


Booker Bush, MD, and Daniel Landry, DO, both in the Department of Medicine, have won 2012 Martin I. Broder, MD Teacher of the Year Awards for 2012.
