Pioneer Valley Life Sciences Institute

In 2002, Baystate Medical Center and the University of Massachusetts Amherst established the Pioneer Valley Life Sciences Institute (PVLSI) as an independent biomedical research institute to build on their history of successful collaboration and leverage their strengths in clinical medicine and fundamental research. 

Research Clusters

PVLSI focuses on three research clusters:

• Breast Cancer




• Apoptosis (Programmed Cell Death)




• Diabetes & Metabolism

These research areas attract participation of physicians from Baystate Medical Center as well as life scientists, physical scientists, and engineers from UMass Amherst. 

Research Support

In 2006, the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative recognized the Institute’s unique ability to build an inter-institutional research community by awarding it funding for the Center of Excellence in Apoptosis Research.

Since it was established, PVLSI has been awarded more than $7.5 million in funding for infrastructure and operations, with more than $21 million awarded in research funding.
